Compendium of Solid Waste Management in Humanitarian Contexts

The Compendium for Solid Waste Management (SWM) in Humanitarian Contexts is a comprehensive, structured and user-friendly handbook and planning tool. It provides a systematic overview of existing waste management technologies and approaches that are suitable for use in humanitarian contexts.

The SWM Compendium is part of a series on WASH in Emergencies. The first three compendiums focussed on the main pillars of WASH - water supply, sanitation and hygiene promotion. This compendium adds another key area to the series: waste management. It provides information on SWM technologies, planning aspects and cross-cutting issues and is based on current initiatives, materials and findings.

The compendium was developed in collaboration with the GWC partners, Eawag, the IFRC and the German WASH network. More than 50 industry experts from around 30 organisations, institutions and networks worldwide were involved in this collaboration.
