Why

Global topics such as the environment, health, or human rights and their interrelationships can be demonstrated using the toilet: More than 50% of the world's population live without adequate sanitation - a degrading situation with serious effects on health and the environment. The right to water, sanitation, and health applies to everyone on earth. Schools must have safe and clean sanitation facilities, as children and young people spend most of their day there. To date, 620 million school girls do not have adequate sanitation at their schools (source).

Education programme "Toiletised World" increases impact

With a pilot project in the second half of 2019, the German Toilet Organization e. V. (GTO) has successfully expanded the impact of its development education work for the first time by using multipliers. Teachers at schools and employees of supply and disposal companies are called upon to apply the knowledge they have learned in their work.

Which competences do the materials promote?

The materials promote competencies of global learning such as the recognition of socio-cultural and natural diversity of the One World, a change of perspective and empathy, communication, judgement and action, as well as the ability to participate and to help shape sustainable development goals. In particular, the GTO is the only NGO in Germany to offer sanitary related materials that include concrete teaching processes for the implementation of teaching units.

How much do the materials cost?

The materials can be downloaded free of charge. Worksheets and copy templates are very easy to print (tip: preferably in color). Print versions unfortunately cannot be ordered.

For which age groups/grades are the teaching materials suitable?

The materials are designed for grades 3-6 and 7-10 in schools throughout Germany. They offer design options for entry, implementation and consolidation, depending on the class level.

In which subjects can the materials be used?

There is a large number of subjects for which the contents are suitable, see project subpages. In Berlin/Brandenburg, for example, the framework curricula anchor the topic of sustainability in school education as an educational topic. This enables teachers to treat the overarching topics of 'sustainable development/learning in global contexts' as an interdisciplinary topic in class.

Is there an option for action offered in the materials?

Yes. In the teaching unit, suggestions are offered for a deeper understanding and ‘didactic reserves’. In concrete terms, further links also provide ideas, e.g. for the construction of a water-saving hand washing facility in the school garden or for improving school toilets.

What is Global Learning?

Global learning is an educational approach and deals with the challenges and opportunities of a globalised world. Global Learning aims to enable students to orient themselves competently and responsibly in a globalised world and to develop an attitude towards global issues and challenges. The students should reflect on their own actions and communicate and discuss their own opinions in the context of sustainable development. (source)

What is the Global Development Learning Framework?

The orientation framework sets itself the goal of anchoring global learning in teaching across disciplines, with the promotion of basic competencies for appropriate teaching: Shaping personal and professional life, participation in one's own society and shared responsibility in a global framework. What are the SDGs?

In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030. These goals apply globally, i.e. to all people in the world, in Germany, as well as in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the rest of the world. It officially says: "Leave no one behind". Goal 6: All people in the world should have access to good toilets and clean water.
